Shadowhunters: Mortal Instruments

In this article I will share my opinion on the saga of books created by Cassanda Clare, Shadowhunters Mortal Instruments.

The Mortal Instruments is a series of six young adult fantasy novels written by Cassandra Clare. It is the first set of books to be published. The series is mainly set in the year 2007 and revolves around the Shadowhunter Clary Fray. She and her friends are confronted with two wars: the first against Valentine Morgenstern, and the second against his son Jonathan (Sebastian) Morgenstern.

  2. City of Ashes (March 25, 2008)
  3. City of Glass (March 23, 2009)
  4. City of Fallen Angels (April 5, 2011)
  5. City of Lost Souls (May 8, 2012)
  6. City of Heavenly Fire (May 27, 2014)

The saga of books takes place in modern New York, everything starts when Clary “a normal girl” meets some strange boys. When she becomes involved with them she realizes that a large part of her life has been hidden and the secrets of her past reach her and introduce her to a world of angels and demons, warlocks, werewolves, fairies and nephilim.

I can summarize each of the 6 books but it is difficult to do it without giving too much spoilers and this post would end up being really long, so I will simply describe my emotions and opinions about the books in general.

Love is destroy, and to be loved is to be destroyed

As the books are a youth saga is expected the unique and different female character who falls in love with the handsome boy, who for some reason out of nothing is completely in love with her (and they do not stay together until the last book which is exasperating). So I have to admit that the main couple at one point start to be bored.

Outside of that the story in general, the villains and the secondary characters are very good.

In romantic themes the relationship Izzy / Simon and Alex / Magnus seemed very good, the characters are well established and their relationships evolve in a very organic way, are they the principal reason that make you want to know what happens in the next chapter with their ups and downs.

The villains are somewhat disturbed, but  I love Sebastian, he is a mastermind to be feared and admired.

In general, the world of shadowhunters is full of different characters and creatures that surround you in their mysticism. It mixes fantasy and reality very well, taking a bit of mythology and varied legends.

It is a saga of books that I highly recommend to those who like to read and are into fantasy books. On the other hand, for someone who does not like reading very much or who is not very interested in juvenile sagas, perhaps this is not the best option, after all, to this day the COMPLETE saga is composed of 12 books (and those that are coming). ..

Favorite character

I have several favorites but I think that the one that took my heart in all the books was Simon. He’s funny, sarcastic and his comments, although out of place, sometimes make the books more enjoyable.

Hated character

Clary, I honestly never liked her, her indecision between Simon / Jace her lack of character and all the concept of “unique and special” made me roll my eyes more than once. But at the end as she is one of the main characters after a while you learn to live with her.
