Shadowhunters, also known as Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments, is an American supernatural drama television series developed by Ed Decter, based on the popular book series The Mortal Instruments written by Cassandra Clare. It premiered in North America on Freeform on January 12, 2016.
When a series of books gets into your head you imagine each of the characters in a very definite way, so when those books become vivid images interpreted by real people, it is very hard that reality and imagination actually match. There are high expectations of physical features and personality, which are not easy to satisfy, but in this case I think that the Cast of Shadowhunters hit 50%.
Simon, Izzy, Alec and Sebastian are perfect, Alberto Rosende is a nice character, funny and nice is impossible not to like him on screen. Emeraude Toubia fit perfect with the strong and sensual personality of Isabelle. Matthew Daddario as Alec is attractive and with that special kind of good vibes that makes you feel his pain in difficult situations when things get out of control. Will Tudor is cruel and bad as his character requires but when it’s due he can convince you that he is the good guy in the story.
On the other side with the characters of Clary, Jace and Magnus I don’t really get very happy. Katherine McNamara is too sweet, the character is a little rough from time to time and the actress just makes you want to hug her so is hard to be afraid of her. Dominic Sherwood is physically attractive which combines with the description of Jace but the center of his personality is his egocentricity that shows vanity without falling into antipathy, this is very difficult and I think it could not be completely achieved in the series, it comes in occasions to be pedantic or lack of grace. Finally the interpretation of Harry Shum, Jr. how Magnus resembled a Jack Sparrow with a lot of makeup not quite what he expected but neither becomes a capital sin.
I was lucky to meet the cast of the series at the Comic-Con in New York 2015, they are all amazing and very nice people. That’s why I was excited to have met the cast face to face and I expected the series to be very good.
What resulted in a sadness to see as chapter by chapter were moving further and further from the original concept, completely modifying the timeline, stories and relationships of the characters to the point where it seemed that they had only taken frrom the books the title and the names of the characters because everything else is completely different.
The series is almost finished and this was a great relief. I know that a lot of fans really like the serie and thas okay, even for those who never read the books is a very good tv show. But for me is always a internal comparison with the books.
